Join Us For 100 Day Countdown Event
The Durham Region 2019 Ontario Parasport Games is hosting a 100 Day Countdown event and everyone is invited to celebrate at Pickering High School on November 1 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Attendees will have a chance to try out parasports, meet athletes and the Ontario Games mascot, PACHI, enjoy a sneak preview of the winning Games medal design, register as volunteers, and enter draws for great prizes. Light refreshments will be provided.
The Ontario Parasport Games is a program of the Government of Ontario, delivered by host municipalities, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS). The Games promote public awareness of parasports and showcase Ontario’s best athletes. They provide host communities with an opportunity to make their communities more accessible and inclusive and to develop legacy funds.
“The Region of Durham strives to be an accessible and inclusive community, valuing the diversity of the residents we serve. Hosting these Games is a wonderful opportunity to share how Durham Region embraces inclusivity and accessibility in our communities,” said Gerri Lynn O’Connor, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for Durham Region. “Our hope is that hosting the Ontario Parasport Games will help grow parasport participation here and across the province.”
The Games Organizing Committee is preparing to welcome about 350 athletes to compete in 11 sports at venues across the lakeshore communities of Durham Region. There will also be almost 200 coaches, managers, and guides, plus family, friends, and other spectators.
“The more we learn about these athletes, their challenges and more importantly their capabilities, the more we’re amazed,” said Don Terry, Games Co-Chair. “That’s why we want to give more people the chance to meet some of the athletes and try wheelchair basketball, boccia, and sitting volleyball.”
About 200 volunteers are needed to successfully host the Games. “So, our 100 Day Countdown is also a great opportunity to find out more about the volunteer roles and register,” said Emmy Iheme, Games Co-Chair.
We look forward to welcoming you to our 100 Day Countdown event and celebrating together.
